Most individuals will only invest in a new asphalt pavement installation a few times during their life. Proper pavement care immediately after an installment is not always common knowledge and may result in damage to your asphalt pavement costing you more money in the long run. If you just finished an asphalt project, you may be wondering what the next steps are and how to maintain your newly paved surface. Here at Galt Development, we have created a list of what you should and shouldn’t do after a project to ensure the longevity of your asphalt pavement!

Do the following after your asphalt paving project:

Do wait at least twenty-four hours before driving on your new surface. Asphalt contains a high quality of oil to help ensure its lasting formula; the time it takes for a material to harden is slightly longer for this product.

The Galt Tip: Wait longer during the hot weather!

Do upkeep and preventative maintenance as the years go on. Cleaning and maintenance throughout the years will prolong the life of your blacktop and help get the most out of your investment.

The Galt Tip: Three preventive maintenance steps to save you money down the road: clean your asphalt regularly, repair potholes right away, and always seal coat!

Do make sure the vehicle’s wheels are rolling before turning the steering wheel. Always try to park the car in a straight line after coming to a slow stop. This will help extend the life of your asphalt pavement for many years.

The Galt Tip: For parking lots, the pavement surface should be vacuumed or low-pressure washed at least twice a year.

Don’t do the following after your asphalt paving project:

Don’t sealcoat new asphalt for at least one year. Numerous products and additives used by outside seal-coaters may cause cracking and other conditions.

The Galt Tip: Sealcoat your driveway or parking lot every two to three years with any cracks being filled or repaired each year.

Don’t park in the same spot every time. Choosing the same spot may leave impressions or create low spots in the asphalt. For trailers or vehicles that are parked for several days without moving, place a piece of plywood under the tongue and a pad under the wheels.

The Galt Tip: Since lawn furniture may also dent the surface of your asphalt, you should also consider the above suggestions to protect your surface.

Don’t use just any type of soil for landscaping options. Certain soil will react with asphalt causing flaking over time and will require repairs.

The Galt Tip: If sod isn’t being used, try using a sifted topsoil and seed alongside your new asphalt.
